Intro:
During my travels I have learned quite a lot about the infected in DayZ. My theory is that the zombies are programed by the virus, To go to towns, Patrol, Guard, communicate each other with updates, only focus on humans and not animals. Towns have a lot to offer, food, weapons, ammo, tools and medical supplies.
Here are facts and my own theories that I had found about DayZ Alpha/Beta zeds.
#1. Zombie's vision has been enhanced while being impaired at the same time.
The Ghouls can not see the floor very well in front of them while are in a standing position but they gained a great vision for long distances. Zombies can also spot the living if they stand inside buildings (possible see their shadow or air movement).
They do have issues detecting the survivors in prone position. A Survivor could be so close to the zed that he could kiss their zed's shoes.
When the survivors crouch, the zombies have to be half the distance closer before detecting the survivor.
Theory: This could be either a side affect or was made by design in the virus.
#2. Flies are not attracted to zombies.
If you kill a zed, Flies don't show any interest in the infected either alive or dead. Examples.
A: Flies buzz around survivors while alive.
B: Flies swarm around and dead survivors.
C: Flies do not buzz around the infected.
D: Flies do not swarm around dead infected.
Theory: This has cause some debate on some forums, since there are various locations in Chernarus of shallow freshly dug graves or just have a blanket put over them that have flies swarming on them. The most logical explanation is that there were stages of the virus changing the blood/flesh/Sweat glands, the final stage of the virus is that the body creates a type of insect repellant that will fend off flies so they would not lay eggs inside the Zombies skin. The other theory was locals were running to the soldiers for protection and was shot. Other were soldiers was killed by zeds and were buried before evacuation.
#3. Zeds are infected, not undead.
They have flowing blood and they will die from being physically hurt, just like a regular Joe-Smoe would. If a survivor was killed by a zombie they will not reanimate as a zombie.
#4. Zombies do not eat or kill animals.
So many times, I have seen zombies being almost hugging distance away from animals. At first I thought it was the tunnel vision being the reason why but I then noticed cows that would match the same height as if a human was crouching walking around them.
Theory: The virus programed to go for the biggest threat, Humans.
#5. Zombies are territorial.
The bigger the town, the more zeds. Zombies patrol the area around the buildings, Each zombie is programmed to have vocal signals. If they see a survivor they will call out attack with their fists. They will chase the survivors unless they are no longer seen or too far away. They then return to their town to wait for the next intruder.
Theory:
A) Zombies are programed to stay near buildings.
B) Vague Memories that lure them to buildings.
C) The creators of the virus programmed the infected to stay near buildings so when people are desperate for weapons, food, water or supplies to risk their changes, it is the best time to jump and kill their victims.
#6. Zombies are not attracted to the church chimes.
If you had fired a single shot from double barrel shot gun in the center of electro you will have the entire infected population on you. Yet the automated ringer going off does not even phase them the slightest.
Theory
A) Zombies are use to it.
B) They don't consider it as a threat.
C)Programed by the virus to not see it as a threat.
D)They Can't hear it..
#7. Zombies can open doors.
Unlike the popular belief in main stream media, zombies can open doors in DayZ and it does not even slow them down.
Theory: They just burst through, No hesitation, no sign of care of injury.
#8. There are no infected Women or Children in DayZ.
In DayZ beta, there are only adult males that are infected in Cherarus. There also is no bodies or bones that match the size of a child any where in Chernarus. Zombies do attack women (You can pick your sex when you start).
Theories,
A) The virus didn't turn them so it had killed them but doesn't explain the bodies.
B) Women and children were all evacuated.
C) The virus does not infect the women and children because they lack testosterone.
D) they are locked inside the houses that we can't access.
#9. Zeds do not roam on main roads.
Just like number 5, they don't roam around in forests or roads. They only stay at building locations.
#10. Infected will chase you until they lose sight.
Zeds have a basic programing, In theory they patrol around buildings, chase and kill any living human that have been seen or heard. Zombies do have short term memory issues, When a survivor is too far away from view or is behind walls or objects they drop to a slow pace while still heading in the same direction they were moving, after a while they give up and return back to their territory.
#11. Zombies can punch through walls.
No matter what the mass of the wall is, Zeds will try and get you and will punch through walls to hurt you.
#12. Zombies do not bite.
When they attack you, they will not bite you. They will claw (causing you to bleed) you until they have killed you, Once dead they will eat your body.
#13A. Zombies do not suffer from fatigue.
Zeds never rest or sleep. I watched a town for six hours until it was too dark, I watched the zeds patrolling around a barn. Not once they had rested.
Theory: The Zombie Virus effects the temporal lobe is effected by the lack of sleep, which in turn effects the language processing, Which explains the moaning and grunts noises they make. Among the numerous physical consequences of sleep deprivation, deficits in attention and working memory.
#13B. In combat, The infected will stop suddenly, then reanimate to life a second later.
Theory: Zombies do suffer from micro-sleep, Microsleeps occur when a person has a significant sleep deprivation. The brain automatically shuts down, falling into a sleep state for a period that can last from a second to half a minute. The person falls asleep no matter what activity he or she is engaged in. Micro-sleeps are similar to blackouts and a person experiencing them is not consciously aware that they are occurring.This can be seen when they are attacking their targets moments when they suddenly stop and sway quietly for a second before attacking.
#14. Zombies have no fears,
A single zombie would charge at a group of survivors, not caring it's own fate. It will yell to sound the alarm but it will never hesitate to attack as a pack or on it's own.
#15A. Ghouls do not need water or food,
except human flesh.
#15B. There are only skinny zombies in DayZ.
Theory: With only one type of meal that the Zeds crave for, they starve themselves.
#16. Zombies hearing have been altered
or their brain that translates the noises has been damaged. If a survivor walks on grass, zombies don't hear them. When a survivor walks on a hard surface (road) they then can hear the survivor. They can not hear well when it rains and they can zone in on vehicles and bullets being fire.
#17. Zombies do have evasive strategies,
so many times in the open I have seen zombies come running at me and then run diagonally.
Theory: It is either part of the instinct or part of the virus that gives them this program to try and waste the survivors ammunition.
#18. Zombies suffer a type of claustrophobia,
Unlike 24 days later, These infected can not function well indoors compared to outdoors. Instead of running full pelt through buildings at their target they hesitate by walking at a slow pace, as if concerned the floor will fall underneath them or the ground is slippery.
Theory: It could be a side effect from the virus on the brain where claustrophobia cross-wiring with it's program to kill and eat the survivor.
#19. Curiosity kills the Infected.
If you make a fire or throw trash/Smoke grenade/flares. Zombies near by, will go and check it out. They don't run but very slowly walk towards the direction of distraction. They do not announce to other zeds what they see unless they detect a survivor or hear clear noises (gun fire, vehicle or just head them running). I have also discovered that if a Zombie is far away and hears a noise they will walk over to investigate it (note depends how loud the gun is and how far away the zed is)
Theory: This is not designed by the virus, What remains of the human brain, still suffers from curiosity, due to the fact they do not communicate what they hear/seen and slowly go to inspect it. If a building has too many zeds i would throw a flare and pick them off one by one from a distance.
#20. The infected have all their body parts.
Every zombie I have fought in DayZ has all limbs and not missing fingers, ears, hands, arms etc.
#21. There are no little people zombies.
Most likely to offend people who may think they are little children.
#22. Zombies do not carry weapons.
If you have seen one, It is most likely a hacker.
#23. There are no nudist Zeds.
Zombies are always fully clothed. Not one shows sign where they were infected while a sleep or bathing.
#24A. Zombies faces are gray and covered in blood yet their hands are normal.
Theories:
A: It is decayed from lack of blood (blood from brain as well).
B: It is actually discoloration of the skin, Such like exposure to silver can cause argyria, in which the skin turns a grey-blue color as a result of deposits in the dermis of metallic silver and silver compounds
#24B. Zombies have blood on their faces
Theories:
A: A deadly sort of Gingivitis that is causing them to bleed.
B: They just fed or blood has dried from feeding.
#25. With a gun you can head shot a zombie, even though it's wearing a helmet.
#26. Zombies do carry around small items.
I read a few guides that tell you that there nothing on a dead zed. Truth be known I have slaughtered an entire town to get food and water and even more ammo from their dead husks.
#27. Zombies Can Teleport In and out of buildings.
Theories:
A: The Survivor that seeing the suddenly materializing zombie is actually caused by hallucinating from suffering stress, paranoia and lack of sleep. If the survivor kills the zombie and even find items on the corpse this is just mind at play and the item is something near by. If they get hurt by the zombie is actually by falling over or walking into something.
